Do You Know The 3 Layers Of A Roof?
There are three basic layers to a roof. Knowing each one and what they're for can help you find competent roofing contractors and know what to look for. Each layer is important and not having one done properly could lead to problems, such as a leaking roof, a short life span, or even a voided warranty. We have listed what each layer is for, and how it should be installed.
The First Layer:
The first layer of the roof is the sheathing or roof deck. A lot of people refer to this as the plywood, but oriented strand board (OSB) can be used as well. The sheathing should be approximately 1/2" or according to local building codes. Both plywood and OSB are suitable, each with a few different properties. The sheathing should be staggered with approximately 1/8" gap allowed for contraction and expansion. The sheathing should be nailed to the rafters every 6" on the boards and every 4" at the joints for proper installation. It's important that this criteria is achieved to have a properly installed roof deck. Make sure the roofing contractors you choose follows this guideline.
The Second Layer:
The second layer of the roof is the underlayment. This is sometimes referred to as the black paper or tar paper. This is the first layer of leak protection, and for this reason it is imperative that this layer be done properly. Typically the minimum required underlayment to meet building code is 15# paper. The underlayment also comes in a variety of other thicknesses such as 30#, 40#, 60#, and modified SBS. We always suggest using at least 30# or better for composition shingle roofs, and modified SBS for tile roofs for longer lasting leak protection. The underlayment comes in rolls and is rolled out onto the roof. Each layer should be overlapped at least 2"-3" and 6"-8" on an end lap. Normally nails should be placed 6" apart and 1" from the edge.
The Third Layer:
The third layer of the roof is the roofing material itself. There are several options such as composition shingle, tile, and flat.
